We love our chickens 🐓 and their eggs 🥚. They see new pastures and get excited about their move weekly. In regenerative farming, our animals do not see the same area of pasture for weeks or months because we allow the area to rest for the soil to regenerate and grass to regrow. In winter when grass is short, we supplement cattle feed with hay 🌾🍃. The strategy we use is where the ground is somewhat bare, we choose these spots for hay feeding. This will improve soil health through the nutrients from the hay, cattle manure and urine. Consider using slow cooked cuts as they are economical and stretch the budget. Here, I have used @coolabahfarm Silverside Steak. Silverside is a very lean cut, a muscle from the rear leg. Brining the meat will breakdown the muscle and tenderise it nicely. As grass growth for winter is low, we prepare by seeding winter grass in autumn - Sorghum, Red Clover, Oats and Ryegrass 🌾. The main reason is growing Multi-Species grass to create a “community” of grass that brings different strength in extracting different nutrients from the soil. 🚜 Which will then transfer nutrients into our animals and into our food. It’s been a great season this year harvesting bountiful hazelnuts! Our hazelnuts are laboriously and lovingly handpicked (literally often on our hands and knees because they fall off the tree) then they need to be air dried before we shell them by hand. We vacuum seal them for freshness that will last for months. They are spray free on regenerative soil! Behind the scenes of farm life : We picked up 400kg of beef from the abattoir in our hired refrigerated truck and the unexpected happened - a flat tyre in the middle of nowhere! Alas, the spare tyre was also flat and had a nail in it. 😕😳😩 Long story short, we prayed and help arrived which we were grateful for however we were 3 hours delayed in our journey. A long day but grateful that it wasn’t raining, it was still daylight and a small country town tyre shop was still opened at 4:30pm. We arrived safely and so did the beef!!
